Free Negroes, Rockingham County, VA 1813

The 1813 Property Tax List for Rockingham County, Virginia, included a list of the free Negroes in the county. Two enumerators gathered information in the county for this census. Based on my knowledge of family names and locations in the county, Reuben Harrison was responsible for the northern part of the county (including my home area of Brocks Gap), and Abraham Smith was responsible for the southern part of the county.

The two men collected different information with Harrison listing the occupation of the men, and Smith listing the residence of the men. Harrison also listed names of the free women. Either Smith omitted the names of the free women, or there were no free women in his territory.

At this early date of 1813, there were few post offices in the county, and so no addresses are given. Abraham Smith's area included some county industries such as Millers Forge.

This list was transcribed from a microfilm copy at the Library of Virginia. Every effort was made to be accurate in interpreting the handwriting, but like any transcribed document, the original should be checked whenever possible. Microfilm records are available for interlibrary loan through the Library of Virginia.
