Mills of Rockingham County, Volume I

Mills of Rockingham County, Volume I contains detailed information and photographs on more than 100 different mills from all parts of the Rockingham County, Virginia. Through the generosity of many residents, old photographs, invoices, diaries, journals, letterhead, cancelled checks, and other memorabilia for many of the mills has been included. Exact directions to the existing mills are given when known. The photographs of flour bags tell their own story of the changes in ownership for a particular mill.

The hardback book is 470 pages long with a complete index. Printed on archival paper, it has 293 photographs and 200 other figures.

Mills of Rockingham County, Volume I is $35 per copy. Please add an additional $5 for shipping each book. Virginia residents add $1.58 per book for sales tax. The proceeds go to the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society Publication Fund for future books on the history of the county.

Mills of Rockingham County, Volume II

Mills of Rockingham County, Volume II contains three sections:
  • Section One is documentation of approximately 30 more mill sites discovered since the completion of Volume I, plus a chapter on ROCCO, Rockingham Cooperative Farm Bureau, Rockingham Milling Co., Southern States and Wetsel Seed Co., and Wampler Foods, Inc.
  • Section Two is an appendix to Volume I with additional pictues and materials on approximately 49 mills which were included in Volume I. There is no repetition in this material.
  • Section Three contains information on four mills on the Rockingham County, Virginia line which were popular with and of great service to Rockingham County residents: Cosby's Mill, Rockland Mills, A. J. Miller Mill, and Verbena Mill.
The book has a color cover (or Hollen's Mill) and is 700 pages long with a complete index. Printed on acid-free archival paper, it has over 300 photographs and 400 other items of memorabilia. Availability will be early December 1998.
