Woods

The beautiful trees of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia have contributed to the arts of the region in many ways. Along with providing sturdy material for housing, wood has given folk artists in the Valley a seemingly endless supply of material for useful objects such as furniture, baskets and household items.

Pictured to the right is a basket from Shenandoah County, artist unknown. Although in some cases the art of the piece is found simply in the skillful manipulation of the wood itself; other objects mirror the designs found in other pieces of Shenandoah Valley folk art, such as a heart design carved or painted on the wood.

Featured in the permanent folk art exhibit at the Center are several pieces made by local furniture makers in the Valley. One piece on exhibit is an 1859 Corner Cupboard made by Abraham Wenger of Rockingham County. Also on exhibit is a 1995 walnut table made by Suter's Handcrafted Furniture of Rockingham County, which represents the continuing tradition of handcrafted furniture in the Shenandoah Valley.
