"The Art of Tradition" is the permanent exhibition of Shenandoah Valley Folk Art at the Shenandoah Valley Folk Art and Heritage Center. It offers an introduction to a variety of objects that all reflect traditional decorations and forms found in the region. The objects in this exhibition are all useful, everyday items that have been decorated to make their appearance more pleasing. This ornamentation may take the form of painted designs or simply an attractive shape. Much of this art reflects the ethnicity and religious background of the groups who originally settled the Valley--Germans and Scots-Irish. There are five categories of folk art that represent the materials available to the settler of the Valley. Within each category, the exhibition offers objects that reflect the utilitarian and decorative qualities of folk art.
