at the John and Magdelena Garber Wampler home site

A commemorative marker at the John and Magdelena Garber Wampler home site will be dedicated on Sunday, August 11, 2002. Rev. Guy Wampler, prominent minister in the Church of the Brethren and a descendant originally from the Greenmount area, will speak, as will Shelvie Carr, President of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society.

According to the late Dr. John S. Flory, President of Bridgewater College from 1910 to 1920, John and Magdelena Garber Wampler, Flory's great-grandparents, moved from Beaver Dam, Maryland to a farm "Long Meadow" in 1811. On this farm of approximately 800 acres, John lived and raised his family. Several generations of his descendants lived and farmed these lands, while others moved throughout the valley and beyond. There families and their descendants, as noted on the recently erected commemorative marker at the home site, have made significant contributions to agricultural, educational, religious, medical, and mercantile endeavors in the Shenandoah Valley and elsewhere.

To reach the Wampler home site from the Mauzy intersection of Interstate 81, go west on Route 259 about three miles to the community of Mayland. Turn right onto Wampler Road (Road #619) and go north about two miles to where Wampler Road crosses Long Glade Run. The site is on the left, across the road from the home of Wayne and Ann Long.
