Topic:  Local Wedding Traditions & Attire

This program is the culmination of several summer activities which have focused around our current exhibit "Valley Weddings, Then & Now, 1870-2008". Dale will share research & folklore related to local wedding traditions in Rockingham County & the rest of the Valley. Shelvie will share information about wedding gowns & attire.

Speaker:  Dr. Peggy Shifflett, Author & Retired Professor of Sociology &
Anthropology, Radford University
Topic:  Childhood in Appalachia

Peggy Shifflett is writing her third book Annie Over: Everyday Childhood in Appalachia. She's a retired Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Radford University where she taught from 1986 to 2005. A native of Rockingham County in Virginia's Allegheny Mountains, Peggy has devoted her life to understanding rural America and Appalachia.

C. W. Grandle, Executive Director, Grandle Funeral Home, Broadway, VA
Topic: Mourning Customs & Undertaking

Lucinda Cooke, who recently portrayed a Civil War widow at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton, will present information on local Victorian mourning customs. C. W. Grandle comes from a long line of undertakers in the Broadway area of Rockingham County. He will share information & stories from his family.

The 2nd annual 5K run/walk will be held at  @ 8am with proceeds benefitting the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society. Click here for more information.


* The lectures generally take place at 7:00 pm in the Margaret Grattan Weaver Lecture Hall in at the Shenandoah Valley Folk Art and Heritage Center in Dayton, Virginia unless otherwise stated.
